Rising above all other downhill mountain bikes, the Phoenix DH is the ultimate World Cup downhill weapon. It's an all-new Pivot Cycles design with the heritage of Dave Weagle's six World Championships behind it. The Phoenix DH offers riders 8.15" (207mm) of travel thanks to a dw-link® suspension design featuring position-sensitive anti-squat. Unique to the Phoenix DH is the fact it has a distinct advantage in overall control and pedaling efficiency over other downhill bikes. Square edge bump absorption is incredible, and the suspension remains stable and controlled in the most extreme conditions. The Phoenix DH pedals like a champ, has the control of a pro and descends like an animal. We're proud the Phoenix DH is a game-changer.
The Critics Agree
After a 22-mile maiden voyage on the Phoenix DH along the Porcupine Rim trail in Moab (an extremely unique trail on which to test a downhill bike), Justin Steiner from Dirt Rag returned and stated, "I'm ecstatic to report the Phoenix DH pedals better than some 5-inch bikes and far better than many 6-inch bikes I've ridden, but delivered the plush big travel you'd expect from a DH bike."
Mountain Bike Action echoes that feeling by stating, "Riding the Phoenix affirms Pivot's claim that the softly suspended downhill bike can indeed be pedaled without shedding tears. In fact, we climbed some impressive hills aboard the 38- pound gravity machine. Because the Phoenix pedals well and feels quite nimble at singletrack speeds, it is hard to imagine that it could generate enough stability for the kind of aggressive cornering and high-speed technical riding that characterize a pro-level downhiller-but it does."
Team Players
Testament to the immediate success of the Phoenix DH design is the fact that a World Cup team is already piloting the Phoenix DH at World Cup races and other competitions around the world. Team LEX/Pivot racers Kyle Strait from the United States, Mitch Delfs and Will Rischbieth (both from Australia) are on board, pedaling the Phoenix DH to great results while working to further develop this groundbreaking downhill rig. Among a host of great results for the team, one highlight is Kyle Strait finishing on the podium in 4th place aboard his Pivot Cycles Phoenix DH at the USA Cycling MTB National Championships at Solvista Bike Park in Granby, Colorado in July of 2010.
Geometry and Handling
The Phoenix DH features a 64 degree head tube angle, 13.6" bottom bracket height and 17.25" chainstay length. Dropouts are changeable and allow for changes in chainstay length and bottom bracket height. As we develop the bike with our World Cup Downhill team, we expect some riders may opt for a slightly lower bottom bracket height on some courses. Yet other riders wanting to use the bike in a more park type setting might choose to raise the bottom bracket to about 13.8" with a slightly shorter chainstay length. The removable dropout option offers a lot of flexibility to tune the bike to the rider and the course.
Adjustable Head Angle
The Phoenix DH headtube is indexed, and head angle is easily adjustable at 0, and +/- 1/2, 1, or 1.375 degree settings via a new adjustable angle headset from Cane Creek.
Lower Center of Gravity
The shock and main linkage are mounted as low as possible in the frame. The shock housing/main pivot/bottom bracket area is designed to allow easy access to all damping adjustments on the Fox RC4 shock. The Phoenix DH's low center of gravity and low bottom bracket give the bike excellent cornering and handling characteristics. Combined with the dw-link(R) design's position-sensitive anti-squat, we can achieve the handling and cornering benefits of the lower bottom bracket without the negatives associated with a low bottom bracket height on other designs.
Frame Stiffness
As with all Pivot Cycles frames, stiffness and durability are a key part of all our designs. The Phoenix DH takes this to a whole new level. We used a 1.5" headtube along with a massive, oversize thin-wall hydro-formed downtube. The two-part hollow BB/seat tube/main pivot forging is both lightweight and incredibly stiff. Plus all front triangle pivot locations are machined from one part, making the pivot locations extremely accurate.
The rear swing arm features two-piece hollow-forged box uprights. The rear triangle is stiff and accurate thanks to all pivots being located on the main uprights-this design is incredibly stiff and lightweight. The Phoenix DH lower link uses 17mm diameter main pivot pins and double row EnduroMax bearings for maximum durability and frame stiffness, while the upper linkage uses 16mm main pivot pins.
